چکیده

Cantaloupes have emerged as significant vehicles of widespread foodborne illness outbreaks caused by bacterial pathogens, including Salmonella . The purpose this study was to investigate the efficiency colonization and internalization in cantaloupes relevant routes contamination. Cantaloupe plants ( Cucumis melo ‘reticulatus’) from two cultivars ‘Athena’ (Eastern) ‘Primo’ (Western) were grown commercial seed. Plants maintained NCSU BSL-3P phytotron greenhouse. enterica (a cocktail cantaloupe-associated outbreak serovars Javiana, Newport, Panama, Poona Typhimurium) contamination introduced via blossoms or soil at ca. 4.4 log 10 CFU/blossom 8.4 CFU/root zone, respectively. analyzed for enrichment accordance with modified FDA-BAM methods. Five randomly chosen colonies each -positive sample typed using Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer following multiplex PCR. Data prevalence serovar predominance fruit, stems soil. Of total cantaloupe fruit harvested -inoculated (n = 63), 89% (56/63) externally contaminated 73% (46/63) had internalized into fruit. Serovar Panama most commonly isolated surface while S. prevalent inside When inoculated one day post-transplant, 13% (8/60) shown translocate organism lower stem (ca. 4 cm) 7 days post-inoculation (dpi). We observed persistence up 60 dpi Newport being predominant 20 dpi. These data demonstrate that can lead plant a relatively high frequency. • Salmonella- internalization. Blossom inoculations resulted percentage S persisted soils post inoculation.

Impact of quinolone-resistance acquisition on biofilm production and fitness in Salmonella enterica.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the potential relationship between quinolone resistance and biofilm production in a collection of Salmonella enterica clinical isolates and in S. enterica serovar Typhimurium serial mutants with increasing resistance to ciprofloxacin. METHODS Nalidixic acid susceptibility and biofilm formation were assessed in a collection of 122 S. enterica clinical isolates. An in ...

Xanthomonas perforans colonization influences Salmonella enterica in the tomato phyllosphere.

Salmonella enterica rarely grows on healthy, undamaged plants, but its persistence is influenced by bacterial plant pathogens. The interactions between S. enterica, Xanthomonas perforans (a tomato bacterial spot pathogen), and tomato were characterized. We observed that virulent X. perforans, which establishes disease by suppressing pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP)-triggered immunit...

Internal Colonization of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium in Tomato Plants

Several Salmonella enterica outbreaks have been traced back to contaminated tomatoes. In this study, the internalization of S. enterica Typhimurium via tomato leaves was investigated as affected by surfactants and bacterial rdar morphotype, which was reported to be important for the environmental persistence and attachment of Salmonella to plants. Surfactants, especially Silwet L-77, promoted i...

Salmonella enterica: Survival, Colonization, and Virulence Differences among Serovars

Data indicate that prevalence of specific serovars of Salmonella enterica in human foodborne illness is not correlated with their prevalence in feed. Given that feed is a suboptimal environment for S. enterica, it appears that survival in poultry feed may be an independent factor unrelated to virulence of specific serovars of Salmonella. Additionally, S. enterica serovars appear to have differe...
